Tooth Erosion

What Causes Tooth Erosion?

Tooth erosion is caused by acid exposure to our teeth. This can be from frequently drinking regular or diet soda, sports drinks, or fruit juices. Some people with illnesses, including eating disorders, can have tooth erosion due to frequent vomiting. These acids basically dissolve the surface of the tooth, and put the teeth at a higher risk for cavities and sensitivity. Ways to avoid erosion are to only have acidic drinks and foods at meal time, and drinking water or other unsweetened and non-acidic drinks between meals. Avoid brushing right after vomiting, eating or drinking something acidic because the acid will temporarily soften the teeth. Always brush at least twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste.
