Secrets to a Whiter Smile

Wichita dentists Frankenbery and Johnson offer teeth whitening to improve your smile! Most people would like to smile with confidence, knowing their teeth are white, straight, and healthy looking. Unfortunately, people's teeth are prone to discoloration over time. Aging, drinking coffee, tea, red wine, dark colas and using tobacco are some of the top culprits behind discolored teeth. Fortunately, teeth whitening (bleaching) is a relatively simple process to change the color of your teeth without altering the tooth structure.

If you're considering teeth whitening, talk with us regarding the type of results you may realistically receive. We provide the best methods of teeth whitening available. Some people are simply better candidates than others for successful whitening treatment. We use the latest teeth whitening products available today to give you a confident, healthy looking smile, and our Zoom technician has performed hundreds of whitening procedures in our office. Tooth whitening is a well-established procedure in cosmetic dentistry. Hydrogen peroxide, the active agent in whitening, has been safely used for many years in the treatments of gums and other oral soft tissue. Options for professional whitening are custom made at-home whitening trays, or in-office Zoom! Whitening.

Zoom! In-Office Whitening System is a revolutionary tooth whitening procedure. It's safe, effective, fast, and is ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. The convenience of Zoom! in comparison to days of wearing trays and gradual whitening makes the perfect choice for the busy individual.

The Zoom! Whitening procedure is simple and painless. It begins with a short preparation to isolate your lips and gums. The Zoom! clinician applies the proprietary Zoom! Whitening Gel, which is activated by a specially designed light. Teeth typically become at least six to ten shades whiter, sometimes more. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the results. In most cases, teeth get even whiter the first few days after the procedure.

The Zoom! Light activated gel was developed after years of research by Discus Dental, the leaders in professional take-home teeth whitening. The gel is sufficiently formulated, pH balanced hydrogen peroxide that, when activated by the Zoom! Light, gently penetrates the teeth to remove deep stains and discoloration. With proper care, and occasional touch up at home, your whiter smile will sparkle for years.

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH DISCOLORATION? There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics, or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

IS TEETH WHITENING SAFE? Yes, extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider teeth whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom! is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

HOW DOES ZOOM! WORK? The Zoom! light-activated whitening gel's active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. As the hydrogen peroxide gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged.

HOW IS EXPOSURE TO THE ZOOM! LIGHT CONTROLLED? The Zoom! procedure requires that all soft tissue in and around the mouth be protected. The clinician is required to monitor the procedure to insure any exposed skin or tissue is isolated and protected. Protective eyewear is required during the procedure. Light sensitive individuals including those undergoing PUVA therapy (Psoralen+UV Radiation) or other photo chemotherapy as well as patients with melanoma, should not undergo the Zoom! procedure. Also, patients taking any light sensitive drugs or substances, whether over-the-counter, prescription or homeopathic, should consult their primary care physician prior to procedure.

HOW LONG DOES ZOOM! TEETH WHITENING TAKE? The complete procedure takes about two hours. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by about one hour of bleaching. A five minute fluoride treatment and post treatment instructions complete the procedure. (A dental cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom! Teeth Whitening session.)

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom! light generates minimal heat which is the usual source for discomfort. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experiences immediately after the procedure but always dissipate. For maximum sensitivity reduction, we request you use MI Paste (see products) before your appointment.

At-home Teeth Whitening

At-home teeth whitening lets you achieve a brighter smile at your convenience. Custom fit whitening trays are made specifically for you after an impression and mold is made of your teeth. Whitening gel is placed in your trays at home, and worn for a specific amount of time.

We offer two types of at-home whitening solutions:
Opalescence Whitening Gels come in different strengths of carbamide peroxide, a more stable and longer lasting form of hydrogen peroxide. The trays are worn for 30 minutes to an hour a day for two weeks, depending on the strength of the gel. Results can be seen within a week!

NiteWhite ACP is a night time whitening system containing amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), potassium nitrate (found in sensitivity toothpastes) and fluoride. All these ingredients help build up enamel and reduce sensitivity, while whitening at the same time. The whitening gel is worn in trays overnight.
